Yorkshire cttee resigns
NZPA-Reuter London The ruling general committee of the Yorkshire County Cricket Club has resigned en bloc as the Geoff Boycott affair took a further twist. The 28-member committee met at the club’s snow-bound Headingly ground for about an hour before a pro-Boycott member, Sid Fielden, left saying the committee had resigned. Their decision comes after a vote of no confidence was passed by club members at a special meeting in Harrogate last week-end, which also voted by an overwhelming majority in favour of Boycott, the 43-year-old former England opener, being offered a contract with the club for 1984. The controversial former
Yorkshire captain was dismissed by the club last October after a period of protracted discord with the manager, Ray Illingworth, the former England skipper. A quarter of committee members failed to attend the emergency meeting because of the severe weather conditions. The committee's president, a former England captain, Norman Yardley, and the chairman, Michael Crawford, will not seek re-election as committee members, they said. The club’s affairs will be run by an emergency 10-man committee until the annual general meeting on March 3, when a new committee will be elected. The question of Boycott’s reinstatement will not be considered by the club until then.
