Youth arrested after shots
PA Whangarei A youth surrendered without a struggle early yesterday after members of the Whangarei armed offenders squad surrounded a limestone reserve near Hikurangi overnight. The police said that between 20 and 30 shots had been fired from a .22 calibre rifle in the town, 15km . north of Whangarei. Some of the shots narrowly missed several girls. The shooting began about 8 p.m. on Tuesday. The youth, who lives in Hikurangi, was arrested in a
house in the town at 6.35 a.m. yesterday. He was charged with possession of a firearm without lawful purpose. The police said other charges were pending. Members of the Auckland armed offenders squad were called to Whangarei and were due to relieve the Whangarei squad early yesterday when the operation was called off. A helicopter was on standby to cover the reserve from the air. The police said they had received a tip-off that the youth was in the house.
