Invitation to smokers
A pilot Government stopsmoking programme is looking for more Christchurch cigarette smokers who want to be rid of the habit. The Health Department is about to restart advertising for its “Stop Ourselves Smoking” programme. The Acting Medical Officer of Health in Christchurch, Dr M. A. Brieseman, said enough “leaders” had been trained to offer about
20 self-help groups in more neighbourhoods. A total of 120 people attended the first round of courses before Christmas. Early results suggested that about 70 per cent of those had stopped smoking at the end of eight weeks. Dr Brieseman said later that checks would'be made on their progress to evaluate the S.O.S. programme. Some of the new courses
had already attracted participants. “People have been so pleased with it that they have told their friends,” he said. Each paid a $2O fee to join a group of about 12 meeting weekly in their neighbourhood, under the guidance of leaders, to discuss their smoking and ways to cope with it. The fee is $l5 for welfare beneficiaries.
