House blaze probe starts
Mrs Liz Krivan, of Christchurch, sorts through belongings in a bedroom at her parents’ house in Linwood which was damaged by a suspicious fire early yesterday morning. Firemen took more than an hour to control the flames in the two-storey house in Hay Street. The owners, Mr and Mrs B. Woodfield, were on holiday at Peel Forest at the time. They cut their holiday short and returned to Christchurch yesterday. Fire-safety officers and the C. 1.8. are investigating the cause of the fire, which badly damaged one room. The rest of the house suf-
fered smoke and water damage. A police spokesman said it was believed there had been a burglary at the house at the same time because there were signs of forced entry. Mrs Krivan also believed there had been a burglary because drawers and cupboards in the bedroom appeared to have been searched by someone. Firemen took an hour to control a fire at a house in Portsmouth Street, Aranui, at 9.30 a.m. yesterday. The house suffered moderate damage. There were no injuries.
