Victoria clue in Aust. blackmail
NZPA-AAP Brisbane The Queensland police believe that Australia’s foot-and-mouth extortionist is a Victorian man. Detective Inspector Gordon Duncan, of Brisbane, said yesterday that a man had phoned a clergyman in Melbourne on Saturday to discuss the extortion threat. “It was obvious from his conversation he has an intimate knowledge of the author of the extortion letters and other details regarding their circulation,” Mr Duncan said.
In copies of the letter sent to state and Federal Government Ministers and agencies the extortionist threatened to release the foot-and-mouth livestock virus which could wipe out Australia’s billion-dollar cattle, sheep, and pig industries.
Mr Duncan appealed to the man to contact the Melbourne clergyman again or to ring the Brisbane police.
“He can be assured his identity and any information he supplies will be treated in confidence,” he said.
