Cannabis ‘for fits’
PA Auckland A woman, aged 23, who pleaded guilty to a charge of cultivating cannabis, told the police that the drug stopped her having epileptic fits, the District Court at Otahuhu heard yestersday. The police prosecutor, Sergeant George Long, said that the woman, Helen Anne Lovini, a process worker, of Otara, had suffered from epilepsy from the age of 10. He said that on January 14, the police found several cannabis plants growing behind a garden shed at her home.
Lovini had said that she smoked cannabis because it prevented epileptic fits. Judge Maxwell said that Lovini needed medical assistance. He convicted her and placed her on probation for 12 months.
