Games chief holds talks on village
PA Auckland The Commonwealth Games Federation chairman, Mr Peter Heatley, has met the Mayor of Manukau, Mr Barry Curtis, to discuss the possibility of building an athletes’ village and training complex in south Auckland.
Last week Mr Curtis suggested that if Auckland was
successful in its attempt to be host for the 1990 Commonwealth Games such a village should be built at Wiri. Any complex built to house athletes could be used later as rental accommodation.
Mr Heatley, who flew over Manukau City by helicopter yesterday morning, was impressed with the area’s facilities, Mr Curtis
said. “He indicated to me that he thought Manukau City was a very suitable place to build a Games village,” Mr Curtis said.
The Manukau City Council could provide many of the facilities required by both the athletes and spectators who travel to the Games, he said.
