No tennis upsets
The seeded players all survived the first two rounds of the singles without much trouble at the BP 16 years national singles championships at Wilding Park yesterday. The only one to be put under heavy pressure was the fifth-seeded girl, Rachael Wilson (Canterbury). She had to fight hard before beating Karen Young (South Canterbury), 1-6, 6-2, 7-6. Willie Laban (Auckland), the boys’ top seed, dropped the first set of his secondround game against Richard Barnett (Auckland), but re-
covered to win 5-7, 6-3, 6-1. The second and third seeds, Lee Galoway and Brett Stevens (both Auckland), won their secondround games in straight sets, but the fourth seed, lan Pound (North Shore) required three sets to get the better of Paul Malbon (North Shore). The top-ranked girls, Edith Tatana, Sandra McGilvray and Angelique Ladewiks (all Auckland), each came through with two-set wins, as also did the fourth seed, Andrea Barlow, of Canterbury.
