Lancaster Park venue

PA Wellington The second cricket test between England and New Zealand, starting on February 3, will be played at Lancaster Park.

The chairman of the New Zealand Cricket Council, Mr Bob Vance, said yesterday that after inspection of the Lancaster Park wicket it had been decided the ground would be retained as the match venue.

The pitch was inspected yesterday morning by the chairman of the Canterbury Cricket Association, Mr Albie Duckmanton, the

N.Z.C.C. secretary, Graham Dowling, and Canterbury’s captain, Cran Bull. “Mr Duckmanton believes the pitch is in much better condition than it had been earlier and he is confident that Canterbury can prepare a satisfactory pitch for the test,” said Mr Vance. "We have therefore advised Napier not to proceed with the preparation of an alternative test wicket.” Mr Vance said that the destruction of a grandstand at McLean Park, Napier, by fire had no bearing on the council’s decision.
