35,000 litres of cream spilt
PA Whangarei The police are looking for saboteurs who are believed to have poured $35,000 worth of cream down the drain at the Maungatapere dairy factory in Northland at the week-end. The valve on a tank holding about 35,000 litres of cream was opened about 12.40 a.m. on Sunday. A waste disposal holding tank could not contain the spillage which eventually ran into a nearby stream, turning it white. Constable Gordon, of Whangarei, said yesterday
that someone stealing cream could have turned the tap the wrong way. However, he said, it was more likely the spillage was deliberate and the police were treating it as sabotage. Eels initially feasted on the cream which covered the stream surface but by yesterday the pollution was driving them away. The Northland Catchment Commission may consider prosecuting the factory for pollution. A commission officer said that a dam built to hold spillages apparently leaked.
