38 stranded on ice

NZPA-AFP Peking Thirty-eight people were stranded in the middle of a frozen lake in northern China for two days last month in —26 to —2B deg. '' temperatures, the “People’s ‘Daily” newspaper reported yesterday. The newspaper said that the 38 had been fishing illegally on Lake Qinghai when the block of ice from which they were working suddenly broke away from the banks.

Stranded on the ice-flow, which measured Ikm by 500 m, the group managed to stay alive by using warm clothes and food dropped from a plane and a helicopter. The plane and helicopter, sent by civilian and military authorities of the Qinghai Province, were unable to land on the ice. The group was rescued after the ice had floated back to the edge of the lake.
