South African cricketers
Sir, — I can assure T. W. Bromley (January 13) that any touring team, cricket or otherwise, representing South Africa, would be met with the same massive demonstrations and protests the Springboks received because of our abhorrence to their country’s apartheid policy. Regarding the two former South African cricketers in the English side, I am informed that they qualified after three years residence in England. As recently as Sunday, January 15, at the Benson and Hedges tennis tournament, HART members demonstrated against the appearance of a South African, Brian Levine, in the tournament. South Africa used to discriminate against our Maori All Blacks until threatened with no more tours. It takes real courage to face long batons and rugby fanatics. Where do T. W. Bromley and other critics of HART stand on the question of "apartheid? — Yours, etc.,
P. A. ROONEY. January 13, 1984.
