Gem reward

NZPA-AFP London Lloyd's insurance company has offered a reward of ’ £lOO,OOO (about $NZ218,000) for information on jewellery valued at an estimated £1 million ($2.18 million) stolen in an armed raid at the week-end on Christie's auctioneers in London.

Christie's press officer. John Herbert, said that there was little chance of recovering the stolen items, even if the four raiders were arrested.

The stones would probably be passed to jewellers for recutting so they would no longer be recognisable, and would then be resold, he said. The thieves took a diamond bracelet and earrings belonging to the Florence Gould collection and two necklaces, one of diamonds and one of emeralds, from another collection. One-third of the £2.5 million (about $5.4 million) collection belonging to the late Florence Gould, daugh-ter-in-law of the American rail magnate. Jay Gould, was on show in Christie’s and due to be auctioned in New York in April.
