1500m a thriller
NZPA-AAP Sydney Michael Hillardt celebrated his 23rd birthday by smashing the Australian 1500 m record and running an Olympic qualifying time at the Pulsar International track meet at the Sydney Athletic Field yesterday. Hillardt won in 3min 35.8 sec to beat the former Olympic champion, John Walker of New Zealand, by 0.07 s in a thrilling finish. Hillardt easily surpassed Walker’s former Australian record of 3min 36.805.
