Sir,—The .“variety of opinion available,” which Chris Reynolds instances, the “Guardian,” “New Statesman” and “Economist” (January 17), are, of course, no variety at all, presenting, as they do, however differing in insignificant aspects, the viewpoint of the English Establishment. The simplistic answer that Chris Reynolds gives to his own questions, perfectly exemplifies a bias conditioned by the news services provided by Western agencies. The bias in Western journals has one blanketing origin — it is the viewpoint of the capitalist classes of the Western world. I would query 1

Graeme Yardley’s statement that Tass “dominates the socialist bloc.” Czechoslovakia has Ceteka, Yugoslavia has Tanjug. I would believe that the other socialist countries similarly have their own news agencies. — Yours, etc., M. CREEL. January 17, 1984.

‘The Naked Breast’ Sir,—We cannot agree with the exposure of female breasts on television. We feel there is a definite lack of educational programmes; but the extent to which the film felt free to virtually display all was unnecessary. Perhaps we have exceptionally passionate views, but we hesitate to concede the need to film bared breasts, to the extent of discussing the ins and outs of female cleavage. We feel that there has been a severe moral misjudgment.— Yours, etc., MR AND MRS PAUL J. DEELY. January 18, 1984.
