The Philippines

Sir,—The New Zealand Ambassador to the Philippines, Mr Holborow, must be credited with one of the understatements of the year in saying that “policies in Washington are followed very closely” in the Philippines (“The Press,” January 18). The United States “purchased” the Philippines from Spain in 1898 for ?20M and took possession byynvasion and the American-

Filipino War in which one million Filipinos died. Since then the economic, political and cultural domination of the Philippines has proceeded virtually unchecked. The Marcos dictatorship is maintained by the financial support of the United States. The local wealthy and powerful elite are secure, while the mass of the people remain desperately poor, exploited and savagely repressed by the widespread militarisation and abuse of human rights. I hope that New Zealand’s developing friendly trade relationship with the Philippines is not similarly at the expense of the poor.—Yours, etc., THE REV. GEOFF GRAY, Philippine Support Group, Christchurch. January 19, 1984.
