Union view on rail staffing

Our failure to recall a correcting report in “The Press” causes us to retract a statement made yesterday in reply to Mr P. S. Corliss, secretary of the Canterbury branch of the National Union of Railwaymen. The reply mentioned a statement last April by Mr Royce Broderick, vice-president of the Railway Tradesmen’s Association. Mr Broderick subsequently said that he did not agree that the railways were overmanned. He said that he intended to say, and should have been reported as saying, that, if there was overstaffing, this could be solved in New Zealand without overseas experts. Mr Broderick was referring to the engagement of New York management consultants to examine the railway system. “The Press” has acknowledged that Mr Corliss does not hold, the View, or ever shared the opinion, that the railway system has been overstaffed.— Editor.
