Aust. Minister to be reinstated

NZPA-AAP Canberra The Australian Prime Minister, Mr Bob Hawke, has announced that Mick Young will be sworn in as Special Minister of State at Sydney today. There would be no changes to the functions of the portfolio Mr Young occupied until his resignation in July after he admitted revealing confidential information on the expulsion of a Soviet diplomat, Valeriy Ivanov, to a lobbyist, Eric Walsh. As well as returning as Special Minister of State, Mr Young would return to the 14-member Cabinet and take over his old position as Leader of the House, in

charge of Government business.

Earlier yesterday, Mr Kim Beazley, who had occupied the portfolio since Mr Young’s departure, submitted his resignation by “telex from Washington. Mr Beazley will retain the Aviation Ministry and his position as Minister assisting the Defence Minister, Mr Gordon Scholes.

Those moves apart, there will be no changes to the

Ministry. Mr Hawke said that he warmly welcomed Mr Young’s return to the Ministry, saying that he regarded him as a man of considerable capacity.
