Car sales up
NZPA-Reuters Detroit Sales of American-made cars in 1983 rose 18 per cent from those of the previous year to 6,795,299, giving the industry its best year since 1979. Car sales of 206,610 in the late December period showed an improvement of 29.1 per cent over the 160,000 sold in the comparative part of 1982, and full December sales rose 24.9 per cent to 559,421 from 448,048 the previous year.
Analysts said the figures confirmed the continued recovery of the American car industry from its four-year slump, although sales were still modest. Sales in 1982 totalled 5,756,658, the industry’s lowest since 1961. Ford and Chrysler each enjoyed their best sales for four years and General Motors had its best sales since 1980. The smaller American Motors said 1983 was its best year for selling cars since 1975.
