The wool market continued to firm with prices for most types rising at least 2.5 per cent at the Christchurch wool sale yesterday, according to the official report. The offering for the second day of this week’s two-day sale was 24,582 bales, according to the report issued by the Christchurch Woolbrokers’ Association in conjunction with the Wool Board and the Council of Wool Exporters. The selection of wool on offer was similar to that of the first day with a predominance of Halfbred and Corriedale fleece wools. Competition was well spread with Eastern Europe and the Far East being principal buyers and China and Japan more active than on the first day. Compared with the market on Tuesday the quotations were: extra fine and fine Halfbred, 2.5 per cent dearer, medium, firm; strong and extra strong, 2.5 per cent dearer, skirtings, to 5 per cent dearer; second pieces and locks, 15 per cent dearer. For crossbred wools fine and medium were to 2.5 per cent dearer; strong, barely steady; second-shear, about steady, lambs’ wool, nominally in sellers’ favour; skirtings, fully 2.5 per cent dearer; oddments, firm to 5 per cent cheaper.
