Flat-listing probe sought

PA Wellington Labour's housing spokesman, Mr P. B. Goff, has asked the Government for a full inquiry into the legality and activities of flat-listing agencies.

Mr Goff said yesterday that while some agencies were more scrupulous, “the area is a wide open to exploitation and rip-offs and the establishment of fly-by-night organisations.”

In a letter to the Minister of Housing, Mr Friedlander, yesterday, Mr Goff said that he was concerned about the widespread complaints made against the agencies by tenants dealing with them and criticism from groups such as the Consumers Institute, the Real Estate Institute, and tenant protection groups.

The complaints against the agencies include alleged

false advertising and alleged lack of any control over the type of people entering this field for the purpose of exploiting the rental accommodation shortage, Mr Goff said.

There was doubt about the legality of the agencies, he said. There was sufficient ambiguity in the law for the Minister to seek a declaratory judgment on whether they were legal.
