Interest in fall-out shelters
PA Blenheim A Marlborough man who has been offering fall-out shelters for $20,000 each said yesterday that he had had eight replies to newspaper advertisements in Wellington and Christchurch. The man said he did not want to be identified. Plans are to build the shelters of concrete blocks separated by a metre of earth. There would be decontamination showers and protective-clothing stores.
There would be a handoperated blower and air filter, a waste-disposal system, and a solar-charged power system for radio and lighting.
Each shelter would have its own periscope, telephone communication with other shelters, and rooms would be equipped with first-aid and survival-aid kits and enough food and water to support two persons for 12 months.
