Decor on Ice
Antarctica is not a place you would expect to go to find high-fashion interior designing. But it seems potted palms and wall lights will be the order of the day in both the officers’ mess and enlisted men’s mess at McMurdo Station soon. Mr Noel Gillespie, a decorating consultant, of Christchurch, will fly to the Ice today to spend three days revamping the place. “Being so isolated down there, they want it to look a bit more cheery, something
like home,” he said. “They want it to look like anything but the cold Antarctic.” Mr Gillespie is not certain what he will do to the buildings down there yet, as he has only looked at blueprints of them. But he will start from a rather difficult base — the walls of the buildings are insulated steel.
The materials for Mr Gillespie’s design changes will be flown to McMurdo Station on the last flight of the season, and the changes will be made during the winter.
