Warning over fibreglass

People cruising in boats with fibreglass hulls in stormy seas could be risking their lives, according to Queensland University researchers.

An electrical engineer, Dr D. Mackerras, said that fibreglass did not conduct electricity and hulls made of the material could be badly damaged if lightning struck a metal mast and could not escape to the water.

“Damage to the boat puts the occupants at risk/ he said. “The simplest approach is to attach a suitable conductor from the base of the metal mast to a metal plate on the outside of the hull at a place in constant contact with the water.
