Defence course attracts jobless
The Woodbourne air base near Blenheim will be the training centre for 60 young unemployed people on a 20week defence course from February 21. Young unemployed people between the ages of 17 and 19 will be paid $62.50 a week while training at the base, if they meet the selection criteria of the Royal New Zealand Air Force. About 70 people throughout New Zealand have already applied for the course, and applications are still being accepted by district offices of the Labour Department. The Labour Department in Christchurch has referred six young people for interviews for the Navy course and nine for the Air Force. Another 15 have indicated interest in the Army course, which will be held for South Island trainees at Bumham Military Camp, starting April 9. Applications have already closed for the Navy course, which will start in
Auckland on February 8. Wing Commander G. T. Clarke, director of public relations for the Ministry of Defence, said from Wellington yesterday that 134 young people had applied for the Navy course, from which 90 would be selected. Testing took place in Christchurch, Auckland, Wellington, and Dunedin yesterday. The Defence training scheme, announced by the Minister of Defence, Mr Thomson, last November, aims at instilling selfconfidence, developing fitness, and teaching basic trade or work skills to course participants. Wing Commander Clarke said that each graduate would receive a certificate of attainment upon completion of the course. However, those wanting to pursue a course in the Services would have to apply in the same way as anyone else and would not be given preference.
