Bowls recognition

Ben Jordan, of the Fendalton Bowling Club, was accorded a rare honour when he was made a life member of the New Zealand Bowling Umpires’ Association at the association’s recent annual meeting in Dunedin.

Mr Jordan is only the third man to be acknowledged in this way, and it is, no doubt, in recognition of the work he has done, and is still doing, as the convenor of the association’s examination panel. This is a big job each year and Mr Jordan, along with his two colleagues on the panel, marks every paper. He then works out the average mark of each

candidate. Mr Jordan started bowls with the Mona Vale club about 22 years ago, and he took up umpiring in his first year. He retained this interest through shifts to the R.S.A. and United clubs before moving to Fendalton. He also has a sound playing record, especially at his favoured game of singles, although at the age of 77 he does not compete now as much as he once did. Mr Jordan has had a lengthy involvement with the Christchurch District Bowling Umpires’ Association, firstly as secretary and later as president. He is also a life member of this body.
