Key role

The coaches of the South Island rifle shooting team, Ben Hoban, of Canterbury, and Vern Neale, of Marlborough, have vital roles to fulfil when the eight-man fullbore team competes against the visiting British riflemen at West Melton on Sunday. It is the job of the two coaches, each of whom will be in charge of a squad of four, to “read” the wind for the shooters and to get them to screw their sights to the right line.

The coaches lie on the mound alongside the shooters and call the shots; the marksmen pull the triggers.

The British team has contested the one-day Wellington meeting and the weeklong New Zealand championships at Trentham recently. It will shoot in the Canterbury meeting tomorrow before competing over four ranges against the South Island.
