NZPA Sydney A mid-morning rally by industrial stocks, which did not carry over into the afternoon, was the only respite for share prices in the first price shakeout on Australian stock exchanges this year.

Resource stocks were out of favour all day after widespread weakness in base and precious metal prices on world markets.

The all ordinaries index was 11.5 points down at 776.5, with the all industrials down 5.9 at 1017.5 and the all resources off 15.8 at 585.0.

BHP fell 25c to 1420, while CSR at 420, MIM at 370 and CRA at 590, were all 18c down, and WMC was off 12c at 428. Renison lost 20c to 420 and North Broken Hill fell 15c to 315. Bougainville at 263 was down sc.

Gold stocks tumbled, with GMK down 70c at 950, Poseidon off 30c at 420, Peko down 16c at 596 and Emperor off 15c at 290.
