Constable bitten
A police constable was bitten last evening when he tried to stop six women fighting among themselves in Colombo Street.
Although the bite wound was not serious, the constable was taken to Christchurch Hospital for a tetanus injection.
The women got out of a
taxi near Smith’s City Market, Colombo Street, about 9.10 p.m. and started fighting among themselves. Two beat constables arrived to stop the fighting.
Five of the women were arrested and charged with fighting in a public place. The other was charged with assault on a policeman and
obstructing a policeman in the course of his duty. A male spectator was charged with using threatening language and possession of cannabis. The six women were also charged with wilful damage to the taxi.
The police were not sure last evening what had started the scuffle.
