Big salmon caught

Greymouth reporter

Bruce Thorpe, aged 19, of Hokitika, landed a 7.7 kg (171 b quinnat salmon after a 30-minute tussle on the Hokitika River below the Kariiere Bridge yesterday morning.

According to Mr Bob Simpson, of the Wildlife Service in Greymouth, the fish was one of the biggest caught on the West Coast for many years.

Mr Thorpe said that the salmon had put up a good fight but finally succumbed “after it carried me all around the river.”
