Kumara gold shared by half-brothers
PA Greymouth The well-known training brothers, Tom and Jim Lalor, had to share the Kumara Gold Nuggets when their half-brother charges, Accelerate and Frontline, dead-heated for first in the feature race and first leg of the T.A.B. double the Sweetman Corcoran and Associates Kumara Gold Nuggets Handicap at the Kumara Racing Club’s meeting on Saturday. The dead-heat was unprecedented in the history of the historic race. Frontline showed a complete reversal of form from Reefton last week where it appeared the track was a little.too hard for him. The more favoured Accelerate, which ran a good second at Reefton, was just caught on the line after a dour battle over the last 500 m. Both horses had been fairly well back in the field
in the early stages of the race. The hot favourite, Noble Note, was leading 300 m out but was unable to hold out the first two. Both winning horses now qualify for the $lO,OOO triple crown series bonus. The on-course turnover on the race of more than $35,000 was an all-time record for a West Coast race. The Kumara-owned and trained six-year-old gelding, Our Silver, won the DB Redwood Hotel Handicap, second leg of the double. The Silver Dream entire was handy early and led from the 400 m, just holding out the favourite, Ribot Vain, to win by half a head. He was no doubt helped by his 3kg allowance. Teri’s Lass (third) was in the middle early and made a big run wide out in the straight, but was still three lengths away at the finish.
