A United States District Judge yesterday ruled that Eastern Air Lines must rehire with back-pay a pilot who underwent sex-change surgery. Judge John Grady ruled that Eastern had" been guilty of violating Federal sex discrimination laws and ordered the Miami-based airline to rehire Karen Ulane as a pilot.
Eastern, which has alleged that Captain Ulane suffered from serious psychological problems, said that it would appeal against Judge Grady’s ruling. Captain Ulane, aged 42.
who had been a combat veteran. Kenneth Ulane, before the sex-change, was sacked in April. 1981. after the surgery.
Eastern maintained that Captain Ulane had psychological problems with unknown long-range effects that could threaten airline safety. It also said that she had concealed she was taking drugs. But Judge Grady dismissed the allegations, saying that Eastern was actually worried its image would suffer from having a transsexual in the cockpit. An Eastern spokesman said that the airline had at least two women pilots.
