Festival programme
Sir—Recently I received a copy of the programme for the Christchurch Festival next February. It is an interesting and promising programme; but it was with increasing dismay that I searched for the word “Maori”; I encountered it only once. The University Maori Club will present a children’s programme in the Canterbury Public Library. I also found the name of the painter Ralph Hotere, but not Witi Ihimaera, Patricia Grace, Keri Hulme, Apirana Taylor, no Herbs, no Maori theafre or carving or dance or crafts, no Howard Morrison. Is the city of Christchurch practising some sort of cultural apartheid? And what about other Polynesian groups? Merely on the basis of proportion of population alone this is appalling exclusion. Can somebody please explain? — Yours, etc., PETER SIMPSON. December 19, 1983.
