Additions for McDougall
Thirteen new works have been added to the Robert McDougall Art Gallery collection for a cost of $21,650. The works include a Frances Hodgkins painting, a watercolour of Richard Oliver’s and a Brent Wong acrylic. The Hodgkins painting is called “Return of the River,” and was probably painted in 1943. The purchase price was $4500. The Brent Wong acrylic is
the second bought by the gallery. “Saga” cost the gallery $6OOO.
Richard Oliver's painting of the “Purau Maori Settlement at Port Cooper in 1850” was bought for $5500 from the Olive Stirrat Bequest fund. The painting is the first bought from the fund, and is of historical importance. Captain Oliver painted the Port Cooper scene in 1850 when he visited the area as captain of H.M.S. Fry, a
frigate engaged on the first hydrographic survey of this country. Other works added to the collections were “Drum Process” by Donald Sinclair Driver, “Untitled” by Ralph Hotere, “Thread Work 1” by Grant Banbury, “Taste Before Eating” by Marilyn Webb, “In the Park ” by David Spooner, “Untitled” by Gary Collins and “Violetta”' by Tony Kuepfer, a glass form. Three prints were pre-
sented to the gallery, two by Mr W. A. Sutton. One was a Pat Hanly work, the other a Barry Cleavin print. The third' was an Edith Wall watercolour presented by Frank McDonald of Sydney. Three photographs purchased by the gallery cost a total of $370. Murray Hedwig, Christopher Matthews and Bruce Connew were the photographers represented. Another photograph by Noel Habgood was given to the gallery.
