Wayward fish poses puzzle
PA Auckland Fisheries officers are baffled by a salmon turning up in a trawler net. The 7.Bkg salmon was caught in about 35 fathoms south of Waikato Heads. Staff at the Ministry of Fisheries are puzzled by why the fish swam 800 km from its native breeding ground in the southern South Island. The regional fisheries officer, Mr Neil Macdonald, said that netting salmon that far north had not been heard of before. Biologists examining the fish believe it could provide important clues about the migratory habits of salmon in New Zealand.
