Rugby Union decision
Sir,—We have berated the New Zealand Rugby Union and its affiliates so consistently and for so long for making the wrong decisions for the wrong reasons regarding playing rugby with South Africa, that, to be consistent, we must now at least thank the Canterbury Rugby Union for making the right decision, even though it is still for the wrong reason. Union members may be the first to deny it, but their refusal to accept the invitation offered by the Western Province union through the South African Rugby Board gives encouragement to the non-racial sports groups in South Africa, who oppose any sports contact until apartheid is finished. It produces those contacts that encourage the apartheid sports bodies, such as the rugby board. Let us hope that this step in the right direction will lead to New Zealand rugby eventually making the right decisions for the right reasons. — Yours, etc., A. J. CAMPBELL. December 13, 1983.
