Fright for top tennis seed

The unseeded Hamish Faulls gave John Honeywell a huge fright in the open boys’ singles at the Court and Field Canterbury secondary schools’ tennis championships at Wilding Park yesterday. Honeywell (Timaru 8.H.5.), a hot favourite for the title, effected a desperate recovery at a stage when he was being pushed to the brink of defeat by Faulls (Christchurch 8.H.5.). Playing splendid tennis, Faulls took the first set and was 4-0 ahead in the second when Honeywell’s strength and experience began, belatedly, to emerge. The Timaru boy scrambled out of trouble in the second set and went on to win a hard-fought third set, 6-4. In the open girls’ singles, Rachel Wilson, Delia O’Malley and Andrea Barlow advanced confidently to the semi-finals. But the fourth seeded Jillian Lavender was no match for the ebullient Lani Ratana, who volleyed well to take the match with the loss of only three games.
