Riccarton street to stay open

The Riccarton Borough Council has declined a request by the Countrywide Building Society to close Rotherham Street on four occasions over three days of next week while Disneyland characters perform. The society had asked for the road to be closed on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday and said it had the support of businesses fronting the street.

The Town Clerk of Riccarton, Mr J. B. Skinner, told the council’s finance and by-laws committee that the Ministry of Transport had been asked for its opinion and had said that if it was necessary to close the street the flow-on effects would be significant.

“I don’t think we need a closing, the thing will work itself out,” said the Mayor, Mr R. W. J. Harrington.
