Men to give birth?

NZPA-AAP London A baby expert believes men could give birth to children by having artificially conceived embryos implanted in their bodies. According to an ante-na-tal teaching pioneer, Mrs Sheila Kitzinger, an embryo could be implanted in the man’s abdominal cavity and develop in a type of grow-bag strapped to his

body. Her views are published in “Parent” magazine, the “Daily Express” newspaper says. “Delivery would have to be by caesarian section,” she writes.

“A baby does not need a womb in order to develop. What it does need is a placenta, and scientists are working on making an artificial placenta.”

“I think this is a long way in the future.

“But if the right hormones could be put into a man’s bloodstream and nutrients fed through an artificial placenta to the baby, a man could maintain a pregnancy with a donated embryo.”

Mrs Kitzinger was awarded the M.B.E. for her work with the National Childbirth Trust.
