Fraud on increase, police fear

PA Auckland The workload of the Auckland fraud squad had become almost intolerable because of a big increase in credit card offences, said a police spokesman yesterday. Detective Senior-Sergeant B. P. Kemp said that each member of the 10-member squad was investigating 200 complaints, about half of which related to credit cards.

He said that in 1981 the fraud squad dealt with 70 stolen card cases. Last year the figure was 89. Early this month the total as 370.

“If we get the same increase next year we will not be able to cope,” said Senior-Sergeant Kemp.

He said that one case earlier in the year, 110 credit cards vanished from a post office. The cards were used 1000 times for goods, cash, and services. Seven detectives spent up to four months on the ensuing inquiry before arresting 17 people.
