Broad rises

NZPA Sydney Share prices closed broadly higher on Australian stock exchanges in moderate trading yesterday with the easing of the Australian dollar against its American counterpart helping miners and other exporters. The all ordinaries index was 7.6 points up at 751.4, with the all industrials 8.2 points better at 973.6 and the all resources up 7.1 at 574.8.

Among situation stocks CUB added 4c to 379 c and Cascade rose 4c to 514 c while its rival, SA Brewing, added 15c to 170 c on very low volume. Castlemaine Tooheys rose 30c to 540 c. BHP rose 15c to 1410 c, MIM 12c to 380 c, CRA 8c to 578 c and WMC 4c to 410 c. Bougainville fell 6c to 262 c. Gold stocks tended firmer with the small rise in the physical price and the weakness of the Australian dollar.
