Women’s rights supported

PA Wellington Women are grossly underrepresented among New Zealand’s decision-makers, according to the Minister of Justice and the Government’s spokesman on women’s affairs, Mr McLay.

In spite of legal equality and some breakthroughs in traditionally male fields, many areas of discrimination against women remained and there was much left to be done, he said on Monday at the launching of the revised Women’s Appointment File publication, “A Guide to Getting On.” “There is one particular area in which women are grossly under-represented in the decision-making positions in society — in management, in Parliament, and on the various boards and statutory bodies,” said Mr McLay.

The manual outlines the functions and membership of various statutory and allied bodies, and was written to assist and encourage the appointment of women to them.
