Seven-year jail term confirmed
PA Wellington A seven-year jail sentence imposed on a man after a taxi kidnap drama in Wellington in June has been confirmed by the Court of Appeal. Leslie William Kiriona, aged 22, unemployed, had been sentenced in the High Court on two charges of kidnapping, two of threatening to kill, and also of using a firearm to prevent arrest, burglary, receiving a firearm, and possessing a firearm. The Court of Appeal, comprising Sir Owen Woodhouse (president), Mr Justice Richardson, and Mr Justice McMullin, dismissed
an appeal by Kiriona against sentence. “Having regard to a psychiatrist’s report, we think that the sentencing judge was entitled, indeed bound, to regard the protection of the public as an important factor,” said the Court. “The appellant had moved into an area of drug abuse and when under the influence of drugs acted in a volatile and dangerous manner. “In these circumstances the need to protect the public made the imposition of a substantial sentence of imprisonment inevitable,” the Court said.
