Inmate breaks hunger-strike
PA Auckland The Paremoremo prison hunger-striker, Patrick Nor-ton-Bennett, took food yesterday for the first time since November 11. He agreed to resume eating after talks with- his solicitor, Mr James Boyack, and the prison’s deputy superintendent, Mr Max Matheson. Norton-Bennett, aged 36, ended his strike when told that his wife, Jennifer, an
inmate at Mount Eden Prison, would be allowed to visit him at 1.30 p.m. day. He began refusing food to protest against restrictions placed on her visits.
’Mr Matheson said that Norton-Bennett would be fed under medical supervision and would be given glucose, drinks and soups until he could cope with heavier solids. He said that Norton-Ben-nett appeared to be in “reasonable condition.”
Norton-Bennett told Mr Boyack, “I have never felt mentally or physically better,” after making the decision to resume eating. Norton-Bennett is serving a 15-month sentence for escaping from Mount Eden on September 11. His wife was sentenced last Friday to a term for attempting j to help the escape.
