General forecast: A ridge of high pressure across southern and central New Zealand should bring generally fine weather with sea breezes in many places and mild to warm temperatures. A few showers and westerly winds are likely about Foveaux Strait. District forecasts: Canterbury: Moderate north easterlies predominating; fine. Marlborough, Nelson, Buller: Fine, mild; light or moderate variable winds with afternoon sea breezes. Westland: Moderate westerlies predominating; fine.

Tomorrow: Cloud increasing and showers likely in all districts; south-westerlies. Extended range forecast for the South Island for Thursday to Saturday: Westerlies gradually giving way to southerlies by Friday; some rain in most areas on Thursday and Friday, but gradually clearing in the west during Friday; on Saturday, mainly light winds and dry, but westerlies and showers about Fiordland and coastal Southland; temperatures a little below average but becoming much colder on Friday.
