Mussel deal signed

PA Nelson New Zealand Marinefoods had signed a two-year contract worth $2.8 million to sell green-lipped mussels to Japan, said the company’s general manager, Mr Neville Male, in Nelson. The deal means 20 more people will be needed at the company’s Havelock processing plant. The company had been

working at Havelock for five months, and the contract with a Japanese fish importing company for 300 tonnes would enable Marinefoods to expand its enterprise much earlier than first thought, he said. “Most of these people will be recruited from Blenheim because of a severe shortage .of suitable labour in Havs ( ock and Rai Valley,”

said Mr Male. Marinefoods already employs more than 50 staff recruited from the small rural community. “There have been public statements recently predicting gloom in the mussel industry.
