Probe into island coup ‘could prejudice trial’

Grenada’s interim civilian Government would not hold a public inquiry into last month’s bloody military coup, the Attorney-General, Mr Anthony Rushford, said yesterday.
Mr Rushford said that an inquiry into the coup of October 19 would prejudice any trial of those who might be prosecuted for taking part in it.
Forty-seven people were being detained and were under investigation for their role in the coup, in which the Prime Minister, Maurice Bishop, three Ministers and several other people died, he said. Among the detainees are the former Deputy Prime Minister, Bernard Coard. His power struggle with Mr Bishop set off a chain of events leading to the coup and a United States-led
invasion a week later. The detainees also include General Hudson Austin, who headed the short-lived military junta, and politicians, soldiers, and supporters of the coup. Mr Rushford said that the findings of a police investigation would be passed to the Director of Public Prosecutions, who would then decide what should be done.
