Plans include demolition
Development plans for Christ’s College land on the east side of Rolleston Avenue will mean the demolition or removal of three houses, including Wigram House. Wigram House, at present used as the headmaster’s residence, is at the comer of Armagh Street and Park Terrace. It was once owned by Sir Henry Wigram.
The school’s bursar, Mr E. R. Eddington, said the buildings on the site would be either offered for removal or demolished. Notification had been made to the Christchurch City Council of the possible demolition of the buildings, he said. Under an appendix to the counicl’s District Scheme, Wigram House is listed as a building of which record should be made before demolition. Three months notification was required. Demolition or removal of the building would probably take place next year, said Mr Eddington.
Other college buildings, at present housing masters, at 14 Armagh Street, would be demolished by May. Flats would be built on the site to provide accommodation for masters and the headmaster, Mr Edding-
ton said. Provision would he made in the development of the Park Terrace site for residences for other than school staff.
Work had not yet begun on surveying the sites, Mr Eddington said. The possibility of development of the sites drew criticism in September from Mr Frank Minehan, a Labour candidate for the Christchurch Drainage Board and the Lyttelton Harbour Board in the last local body elections. He said that there should be public debate on the matter before development went ahead.
