Details sought on A.I.D.S. man
PA Wellington The Health Department seeks details of a New Zealand man in Sydney who has been diagnosed as having the killer disease, A.I.D.S. (acquired immune deficiency syndrome). The department has sent a telex to the New South Wales Department of Health asking if the man, who is homosexual, has visited New Zealand recently. Dr John Clements, the department’s assistant director of disease prevention, said he did not expect the answer to be “yes.” Reports so far indicated the man had travelled in the
United States and Europe rather than in New Zealand. However, if he had been in New Zealand, health officers would try to track down persons with whom he had had contact; According to departmental guidelines issued this month, likely contacts would be advised to abstain from all sexual encounters. Dr Clements said the man, aged 29, was the first New Zealander known to have been diagnosed as having A.I.D.S. He is one of two confirmed cases in New South Wales and is seriously ill in St Vincent’s Hospital in Sydney.
