Marsden Pt project suspensions
PA Wellington The joint Venture II construction consortium suspended 179 workers yesterday because of the continuing strike by 200 riggers on the Marsden Point Oil Refinery expansion project. The riggers struck last Thursday, seeking a confined space allowance for five of their members involved in assembling finfans for the new refinery’s cooling system. A JVII spokesman, Mr Geoff Mincmm, said last evening that a disputes hearing had been scheduled for 2 p.m. this afternoon. However, a Northern Labourers Union spokesman, Mr Danny Bradley, said the riggers wanted the Arbitration Court to settle the matter. The suspension notices issued yesterday covered drivers, carpenters, trade assistants, boilermakers and labourers. Twelve riggers employed by Chicago Bridge and Iron on expansion tank-farm construction are also on strike in support of the JVII riggers. C.BJ.’s construction manager, Mr Michael Dautovich, said that his company’s 140 employees had been notified of the possibility of suspensions if the riggers’ strike continued.
